Charles Lester McElheny, age 94, a resident of Klamath Falls, returned home to his Heavenly Father and his beloved wife Dorothy on May 16th, 2021.
Charles was born to Alexander Lester McElheny and Sarah (Haller) McElheny on July 17, 1926. Charles grew up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, graduating high school and eventually college, earning an undergraduate degree from Mansfield University and a Masters from Oregon State University. Charles met and married Dorothy Powers in June 1951 and had four children.
Charles was a career Marine Officer who joined the United States Marine Corps in 1944 and received a battlefield commission during World War ll. He served in three wars, World War ll, Korean War, the Vietnam War and was a decorated veteran who was awarded the Military Order of St Barbara Medal, Legion of Merit (V), Bronze Star (V) Medal, Navy Commendation (V) Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.
Charles and Dorothy came to Klamath Falls in 1972 where they finished raising three of their four children. Charles and Dorothy enjoyed the Klamath Falls area and all it had to offer, especially its outdoor recreation.
Charles was active in the community and his Church. He was a Mason and a Scottish Rite member as well as a lifetime member and active supporter the Boy Scouts of America.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents (Alexander and Sarah), younger brother (Franklin) and his beloved wife Dorothy. Charles is survived by son Bruce and his wife Candi of Baton Rouge, LA.; daughter Sharon of Klamath Falls, OR.; daughter Lynn of Klamath Falls, Or.; daughter Deborah and her husband Roy of Longmont, Co.; and grandchildren Aric, Christopher, Stefanie, Drew, Colton, and Mackenzie.
A private memorial will take place for the family.
A Celebration of Life for friends and family will be planned for a later date.
Some souls leave behind a trail of light that is never forgotten and Charles is one of those souls.
