Gary Byron Snyder

Gary Byron Snyder, 53, passed away on October 23, 2019.  He was born on May 30, 1966 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma to parents David and Carol (Jody Wonser) Snyder.

Growing up in Klamath Falls, OR, Gary developed a passion for the outdoors at a young age and became an avid hunter and fisherman.  Spending many weekends camping and enjoying time outdoors with his parents and younger brother Ken.  He had a love for sports and was involved in soccer and wrestling throughout his teenage years, graduating from Mazama in 1984 with varsity letters in Soccer, Football and Wrestling.  Gary was well known for his ability to make people laugh and love of practical jokes, being awarded Class Clown his senior year.

After graduation, Gary followed in his father’s footsteps joining the Army.  He later became a Drill Sargent, with assignments in South Korea, Texas, and Georgia.  During his time in Georgia, he was set up on a blind date with Julie Cottongim, who would later become his wife of 31 years on November 7, 1987.  Together, they moved back to Klamath Falls, OR and raised two daughters, Heather and Andrea.

After being honorably discharged from the military, Gary became the third generation in his family to work as railroader, working for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe.  Throughout his career, he worked as a Conductor, Switch Foreman, and Yardmaster, while also serving the United Transportation Union, as the Local Chairman for Local 1841, Legislative Representative and multiple other positions.  After federal safety regulation changes at the railroad (regarding color impairment), he was medically retired at the age of 48, after 27 years of service.

Gary will be forever remembered for his quick wit, hysterical storytelling, ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, stubbornness, and love of the outdoors. You could always count on him for easy conversation, abundant laughter, and love for his fellow man.

Gary is survived by his parents, Dave and Jody Snyder, brother Kenneth Snyder, wife Julie Snyder, daughter Andrea Snyder, daughter and son-in-law Heather and Clay Miller, and granddaughter Riley Miller. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Sly, along with many other relatives and friends.

Gary requested cremation and interment at The Eagle Point National Cemetery.  A celebration of Gary’s life will be held for family and close friends in the near future.
